English
Yearly Goal: To make reading books a routine, which could be useful for enhancing vocabulary and grammar.
Quarter 2
In English this quarter we started reading our first book of the year which was about a survivor of the Holocaust. The book was called Night, and was written by Ellie Wiesel. The quarter was based primarily on the content of the book, and we were required to analyze and understand its content to carry out projects, assignments, and tests that were all based on it. The better we were able to understand the content in the book, the easier it was for us to justify it in our assignments.

Life in Auschwitz Presentation
My chosen work for this quarter was the presentation my friend Prem and I presented in front of class, about how life was inside the infamous concentration camp Auschwitz. Our assignment was to analyze the topic we had chosen, and try to explain it as detailed as possible in front of the class, in order to teach them about what our topic was, and for them to understand it. The reason why this has become the best sample of work this quarter, wasn't only because the presentation had 30 slides full of information, and took at least 45 minutes to present. It was also because I believe I was able to present the information successfully in class, and from all assignments I had done this quarter in English, I was able to do this was very well. The reason for my success in this assignment, was that it wasn't primarily based on the book, but also based more on history, which is a field I like. So it was easy for me to research and find information. I as well had already researched about this topic earlier in grade 9, as well as remembered most of the facts related to Auschwitz. Meaning that I pretty much knew what I had to do, and how to teach it effectively to the class. This success made it easy for both Prem and I to do our assignment, and to face minimal obstacles.
The criteria for this assignment was based on Criteria C and D, which are about our way of producing text, as well as our use of language. I through my progress on working on this assignment was able to do both very well. As I was able to produce the necessary information I had to present, as well as knew what I had to present. Due to the fact that I already had pre knowledge of the topic, making it more easier to do this assignment. Though I was able to do it successful, there are always things I could improve for the next time, which are to present the presentation within the given range of 15 minutes. This both Prem and I weren't able to do, as we conducted our presentation for around 45 minutes, which was three times longer then what it was initially suppose to be. To improve this next time, we should decrease the number of slides we would present, and also focus more on what the key concepts are for each thing we would present. In order for us to present a short, yet very detailed and understandable presentation. This would be done by analyzing the topic even more, and filtering the information we find. In order to in the end get to these key concepts, and being able to present the necessary information to present within a time range of 15 minutes.
The key concept for this quarter in English is Connections. Through this quarter we developed our understanding on this Key concepts. As this quarter was based on a book, written by a survivor of the Holocaust. We often had to connect the content of the book with real life events, such as our own experiences, in order to understand the content in the book. This enabled us to understand how it felt like to be a victim of the Holocaust, and know why its important to remember. One of the connections we often made with the content of the book, was to understand the meaning of Hope, and Gratitude. As those were the morals often found in the book, where hope was the only reason for man to survive in the so called 'Hell on Earth.' We were also easily able to connect hope with out own experiences, when we faced difficult odds, and problems in live, and depended on hope in order to make things better. We also often discussed these ideas during Literature Circles held every Friday, increasing our connection of the book, as well as our understanding of the Key Concept.
